New Word of the Day

irritainment

Slang for annoying entertainment and media spectacles you’re unable to stop watching. For example, the O.J. Simpson trial and Paris Hilton going to jail.

Its an american phenomenon, one I hope European media somehow avoids turning (Or should that be TUNING) into.  Lord knows, we don’t need more of this shit.

Unfortunately, this phenomenon has already arrived in Europe. Watching the soap operas of the daily life of D-list ‘stars’ unfold has become frighteningly popular. Take, for example, the unbearable weekly spectacle of the engagement of ‘Foffi’ and ‘Tatti’ – aka Prince Ferfried of Hohenzollern and Tatjana Gsell, formerly known as the “Busenwitwe” – which roughly translates into ‘the booby widow’, not because she lost them but because her former husband was a beauty surgeon and enhanced said body parts mightily before he passed on. Tatti was accused of having a hand in that, but later cleared of that charge, but convicted of others. Well, then she found her prince and he wanted to marry her and take her to his palace in his white Rolls Royce. The painful weekly episodes showing how she got a crash course in table manners (“it is not polite to chat about the size of his you-know-what during dinner!”), his strutting around and flaunting his young trophy fiancee, them planning the wedding, and the final breakup (“you never listen to me! you never undestand me!”) were quite irresistible. Why? These two were so horrible, fulfilled every cliché you could think of that it was a morbid fascination of the absolute triviality, banality and stupidity of it made me watch it. Not much to my credit, I admit. My brain walked out on me once or twice during that show. I promise I will not embarrass brain again. At least until the next fascinating horror show.

I think they are addictive in the sense that you simply can’t believe that they are happening… So you watch to see how bad it gets and then wonder why you did that….. But they are funny….
    Painfully so…..

And we keep watching them just to see how low TV and people can get for their 15 mminutes of fame….

Some days I think its lower than others….

Does it make us low too, to watch although we know that it is stupid? Like voyeurists?
